Heading into the holiday season, we have a couple of stocking stuffers for you this week. Andrew Anderson has written an introduction to the Jakarta Slide project with Sliding into WebDAV. Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning is a "set of extensions to the HTTP protocol that allows users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote servers." The article introduces these extensions and the Slide project and then provides examples you can take out for a spin.
Caching is always a balancing act. You need to store some data to improve the performance of your application. But as soon as you cache your data, the "freshness" clock starts ticking. Soon the data is no longer as up to date as it needs to be. Srini Penchikala's article Object Caching in a Web Portal Application Using JCS describes how to use the Jakarta Turbine project's Java Caching System (JCS) to improve the performance of your web app. After you've waded through the details of the example, take a moment to read through Srini's guidelines.
Our java.net feature this week is a great set of activities for you or for you and your children over the next week or so. Download a free copy of StarLogo and enjoy your explorations. Mike Clark has written a wonderful introduction and overview to exploring complex systems and emergent behavior in StarLogo, Give the Gift of Learning. It's how I'm spending the end of this week with my daughters.
