MS File Formats, Swing Menus

ONJava Newsletter for 01/23/2003

Dear Readers,

Welcome to another version of the ONJava newsletter. The big news this week is that Microsoft will have to include a JVM in Windows again--but will it actually matter? Time will tell.

Speaking of Microsoft, have you ever noticed that businesspeople love their Excel files? Sure, you can ask for files in CSV format, and you can provide them as HTML tables, but good luck getting users to switch. Reading and writing Office-formatted files from Java has been a tricky thing in the past. Thankfully, we have Jakarta POI now to take care of the tricky bits. In Opening MS File Formats to Java, Avik Sengupta and Andrew C. Oliver demonstrate the basics of the library and explain how it came to be. We'll be hearing more from these guys very soon.

This week's book excerpt again comes from the second edition of Java Swing. This time, it's all about menu bar selections and the versatile JMenuBar. Read more in Java Swing: Menus and Toolbars, Part 2.

There are some great stories coming up in the next couple of weeks--dependency checking, Maven, design patterns, and more. As well, we're working on much-improved discussion forums for new and upcoming books. Stay tuned!

Until next time,
